Asma al-Assad (born Asma Fawaz al-Akhras on August 11, 1975) is the wife of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Born and raised in London to Syrian parents, she is of Sunni Muslim heritage. She is a graduate of King's College London with a degree in computer science and French literature.
Prior to her marriage, she worked as an investment banker at JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank.
She married Bashar al-Assad in December 2000. Before the Syrian Civil War, she was seen as a modern and progressive figure, often compared to Princess Diana. She engaged in various charitable and social initiatives within Syria.
However, her image has been significantly tarnished by her continued support of her husband's regime during the Syrian Civil War. She has been criticized for her silence on the atrocities committed by the Syrian government.
Asma al-Assad has been subject to sanctions from the United States and the European Union due to her role in supporting the Syrian government.
